An Experiential Journey Through Interest-Based Learning

The goal of the Gold Crown Enrichment Clubhouse program is “to provide a creative, accepting environment that encourages our members to imagine creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively in order to learn continuously!” One of our longtime members, Kalel, exemplifies that statement and more with his latest project.

At the Annual Clubhouse Network Conference, Kalel was presenting his work while sporting his hard rock bank t-shirt. One of the Territory Managers of the Clubhouse Network, Justin, was intrigued because he sits on the board of directors for the Scar’s Foundation. The Scar’s Foundation was founded by Sully Erna, the lead singer of the band, Godsmack, and “provides resources and tools to educate and empower people on a global level that struggle with mental health burdens.” Justin focuses on their youth ambassadors’ program, and thought Kalel would be a great addition.

Kalel created a campaign about why he creates and what drives him through that creative process. Due to his interest in photography, he created five artist statements surrounding his work and has been posting on Instagram in partnership with the Scars Foundation.

An Excerpt From Instagram

“This photo was taken in Prague, Czech Republic, during my first trip outside of America. On my first morning there, I was awakened by the stunning pink and orange hues of the sunrise. Captivated by the beauty, I decided to get up and capture the moment with my camera.

This trip was a family vacation, and I only sometimes get along well with my family. At the time, I was also struggling mentally, so being greeted by such a breathtaking sight was truly eye-opening. It made the trip easier to handle and gave me a sense of peace amidst the chaos.

This photograph symbolizes a moment of clarity and beauty in a challenging time, reminding me of the unexpected wonders that can bring light into our lives, even when things seem tough.”

Kalel also received $1,000 to print his photographs on metal sheets and display them during our Project Showcase event (picture above). He wrapped up the project by attending Godsmack’s Concert on October 17th as a Scar’s Foundation guest to review and photograph the concert. With this experience, he is inspired to continue his photography journey and expressing himself through photography.
